وفي واشنطن، أكد وزير الدفاع الأمريكي روبرت جيتس أن وزارته أمنت فقط 200 جندي إضافي لإرسالهم إلى أفغانستان، ملمحا إلى ضرورة انتظار خفض القوات في العراق لإرسال مزيد من التعزيزات.

وتابعت أن "2500 شخص قتلوا هذه السنة في أعمال عنف حسب معلوماتنا، بينهم نحو ألف مدني، مع أن الأرقام الدقيقة لم تتوافر حتى الآن".
