The Rise and fall of a Star
One of Canada’s greatest sporting triumphs turned to dust when Olympic Ben Johnson, born and raised in Jamaica, was stripped of his gold medal when tests revealed he had used a performance –enhancing drug. It is illegal for any athlete competing at the Olympic Games or any other competition, to use such drugs. The international Amateur Athletics Federation ordered that the sprinter be banned from competition for two years. It also awarded the gold medal for the 100 metre race to Carl Lewis of the U.S.A. who finished second. Politicians who only days before, had sent Johnson telegrams of congratulations were quick to comment on this surprising turn of events. “It’s a personal tragedy for Ben and his family .it is also a moment of great sorrow for Canadians.” Said Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. When asked if they were aware of the use of steroids by members of Canada’s and other teams, some athletes who did not want to be named, said they had suspected it for some time. Some even felt relief that Ben Johnson’s drama had brought the issue into the open and that illegal drug would now be investigated.
