أخبرنا العلم بالكثير عن القمر ؛ فأصبح من السهولة بمكان تخيل كيف سيكون الوضع لو ذهبنا هناك. إنه بالتأكيد ليس مكانا مناسبا للإقامة ؛ فليس هناك هواء و لا ماء ، و لا يمكن أن يكون هناك أي نوع من أنواع الحياة. و لا يوجد هناك مناظر متنوعة أيضا. هناك تمتد السهول المسطحة الترابية ﻷميال و أميال و تحيط بها الجبال. فوق تلمع الشمس و النجوم في السماء السوداء. إذا خرجت من ظلال الجبال ؛ فسيعني ذلك الانتقال من الشطر البارد إلى شطر ساخن جدا. الحرارة الهائلة المستمرة تكسر الصخور بعيدا عن أسطح الجبال. و القمر عالم صامت أيضا ؛ فالأمواج الصوتية لا تنتقل إلا بواسطة الهواء. و لكن خلف الأفق تستطيع رؤية مشهد ودود. كوكبنا الأرض بلمعان أكثر من النجوم. من تلك المسافة تبدو الأرض ككرة هائلة الحجم ، و ملونة بالأزرق و الأخضر و البني.
