لاحظت الزوجة تعبه رغم محاولته إخفاء وهن وانحناءة ظهر ، فاحت منه رائحة عرق تعب النهار ، أسرعت واهتمت به ، قدمت له البرنس بعد أن خرج من الحمام ، وباشرت بتقديم وجبة الطعام ، بكى صغيرها ، أسرعت في جلب الصحون من المطبخ ، أوقفها ، وراح يجلب ما تبقى من الطعام بنفسه ، بينما راحت تهتم بطفلها ، مضغ لقمة بصعوبة ، كادت تتصلب في فمه ، جف لعابه الذي امتزج مع صراخ الطفل المتزايد ، ذوّب اللقمة العالقة في قبة الحنك بجرعة ماء ، ودفعها بجذر لسانه نحو خزان المعدة ، ازداد زعيق مولوده ، أعاد لقمة ثانية عن شفتيه ، وضعها على طرف الصينية ونهض ، أخذ الطفل من حضن أمه ، مرجحه بين زنديه ، مسح جبهته برؤوس أصابعه ، فتح النوافذ ، وسمح لنسيم الغروب بالمرور، نظر إلى عيني الوليد الخرزتين ، وهما تلمعان مثل نجمتين في سماء وجهه ، تبادلا نظرات ثابتة ، ضمه إلى صدره أكثر ، همس له بكلمات دافئة ، هزه بين ذراعيه كمرجوحة ، راق الطفل ، هدأ ، لحظات وبدأ يناغي ، ارتسمت على وجهه ابتسامة وردية ، فاح منه سكوت ورضا ، مسح عن وجنتيه دمعات دافئة ، تمشى به في الغرفة ، ارتاح لراحة طفله ، غنى له ، جلس على كرسي هزاز ، وظلا على هذه الحال حتى ناما معا كطفلين تحت أنظار الأم ، وهي تمرر نظرها إليهما ، وإلى الطعام الذي برد .

Non appena rientrato dal lavoro, la moglie si era accorta della sua stanchezza, nonostante gli sforzi che faceva per nascondere la pesantezza della schiena curva; odorava di sudore, per la fatica del giorno, ma lei subito, premurosa, lo aveva accolto con affetto curandosi di lui.
Gli porse l’accappatoio dopo che ebbe fatto la doccia e si mise ad apparecchiare la tavola, mentre il piccolo già iniziava a piangere; lei portava in fretta i piatti dalla cucina, e vedendola così affaccendata, lui si alzò dal suo posto e si offrì di mettere in tavola il resto del cibo per darle la possibilità di accudire il bambino.
Cominciò a masticare il primo boccone con fatica, perché diventava duro da inghiottire nella sua bocca; le mancava la saliva, era preoccupata per suo figlio che piangeva sempre più forte; prese un sorso d’acqua con la speranza di far scogliere quel che rimaneva del boccone e dopo lo spinse con la radice della lingua verso lo stomaco. Il neonato continuava a piangere, quando il padre si alzò deciso dal tavolo togliendosi il secondo boccone di bocca, per prendere il bimbo dalle braccia della madre, cominciò poi a dondolarlo accarezzandogli la fronte con le dita e aprendo le finestre per lasciar entrare la brezza pomeridiana. Guardò gli occhi di suo figlio, che brillavano come due stelle nel cielo del suo volto, si scambiarono profondi sguardi, lo strinse contro il suo petto bisbigliandogli parole tenere e dondolandolo sull’altalena delle sue braccia; fu così che il bambino si calmò e cominciò a lanciare teneri e allegri gridolini, mentre si disegnava un sorriso rosa sul suo viso. Il padre gli asciugò dolcemente le lagrime, camminando per la stanza finché il bambino non si fu tranquillizzato; poi sedettero tutti i due su una sedia a dondolo, e rimasero così finché sprofondarono insieme in un profondo sonno sotto lo sguardo dolce della mamma che li rimirava e osservava il cibo ormai raffreddato.
